Elections for the next academic year are held each spring semester and any member of the union in good standing can run for election.
Below are descriptions of the positions.
President
- Chief spokesperson of the GEU when interviews or quotes are requested
- Represent the Union to the Employer in labor management meetings
- Support relations with other campus groups
- Collaborate with Treasurer on GEU budget
- Attend Board of Trustees meeting when issues come up related to the GEU
- Maintain communications between Executive Board officers
- Maintain contact with the president and field representatives from the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) through trainings, LEAD sessions, and other relevant AFT programs and presidents of the locals in Michigan via Michigan Alliance of Graduate Employee Locals (MAGEL)
- Supervise staff members
Vice President of Organizing and Outreach
- Chair of Stewards Council
- Organize outreach and activities
- Help with organizing events regarding member issues
- Help with training members with their organizing skills
- Work with staff
- Hiring of new members
- Work to develop new organizing strategies
- Serves as acting president if president is absent or leaves/steps-down
Vice President of Contract Negotiations and Enforcement
- Represents union to employer regarding contract issues
- Attend bi-monthly meetings with MSU Office of Employee Relations
- Act as liaison between Executive Board, Stewards, and Bargaining team
- Chair of the Member Defense Committee, including setting/sending agendas to committee members, facilitation meetings, and oversight of issue tracking
- Recruit and train Member Defense Committee members
- File issue documents, including semester summary
Treasurer
- Chair of the Budget Committee
- Prepare budget and financial policies with input from Executive Council, Budget Committee, Stewards, and General Membership
- Work with our accountant to reconcile and review the finances for the fiscal year end and tax year end
- Point of contact for business relations
- Writes and signs checks to pay bills
- Collaborates with Solidarity Grant Administrators and and Budget Committee to administer Solidarity Grant
- Oversees bookkeeping
Chief Information Officer
- Chair of the Publicity Committee
- Draft, edit, and distributed emails to GEU members, non-members, and department stewards
- Advise promotional campaigns and prepare promotional materials
- Update organizational documents
- Develop website and social media presence
- Manage social media accounts
- Delegate the creation and management of institutional memory
International Chair
- Chair of the International Student Committee
- Facilitate or support biweekly IGSC meetings
- Build coalitions with other international communities on campus
- Recruit and coach committee members on international issues
- Lead semesterly moment of understanding meeting with English Learning Center
