Remembering MLK – Jan 16th

In our most recent contract negotiations the GEU and MSU affirmed mutual commitment to diversity and inclusion and encourages supervisors to be flexible in permitting TA’s to participate in events associated with commemorating Dr. King. There are many opportunities to GEU members to participate in this year’s MLK events. If you are denied a reasonable request to participate in an event associated with MLK Day, contact the Union for support in working out a mutually agreeable arrangement.

The theme of this year’s celebration at MSU is “Social Injustice – Your Turn to Act.” One of the more popular events is the Community Celebration Dinner. The free dinner will be held Monday, Jan 16th in Akers Hall Dining Cafe starting at 4:30pm. Pre-registration is required and can be done at msuinclusion.wufoo.com/forms/mlk-community-dinner-reservation-form/.

GEU members will once again be participating in the “Into the Streets” Commemorative March on Monday, Jan 16. Join us in the MSU Union lobby at 3 pm.

Extra Tuition Waiver Credits

If you are a teaching assistant this summer (2012) your tuition waiver will cover 5 credit hours. If you need to take additional credits, you are not out of luck, though! During GEU’s contract bargaining with the university last spring, GEU negotiated for 100 extra tuition waiver credits for our TAs to use. So, if you need to take more than 5 summer credit hours, be sure to take advantage of this opportunity. Click on the following link for details:

Keep in mind, once you are awarded extra tuition waiver credits, they cannot be awarded to someone else. So please be responsible and courteous to your fellow TAs when you apply.

Upcoming event! Uncle John’s

We’ll be heading up to Uncle John’s for fun. There will be pumpkin and apple picking, hay rides, bouncy castles, a corn maize, and a host of other activities to do for adults and kids alike! There will also be a free pizza luncheon at 1:00. Come along for a good time! Free transportation is available to those who need it.

GEU Stewards Training!

Are you a current Steward for your department? Are you interested in being a Steward? Unsure of how to handle that responsibility? Fear not! There will be a Stewards Training on Saturday, September 17 from 10am to 1pm at the GEU Office. Come get your questions answered about what your role in the Union is, how to build membership, and how to organize your department. SNACKS WILL BE PROVIDED!! Stewards Council

The Stewards’ Council is GEU’s governing body. Every department is entitled to at least one Steward, who helps make GEU decisions, communicates GEU information to their Department, and keeps the rest of GEU updated on what’s going on in their Department. Stewards’ Council meets once a week or once every two weeks for an hour, with a meal provided.

With the changing semester, some of our old Stewards are leaving for bigger and better things. That means we need new Stewards!

If you don’t know who your Department’s Steward is, chances are there isn’t one. So come aboard! Email geu@geuatmsu.org to let us know you’re interested in signing up!

Bargaining Update #8

The GEU and Administration bargaining teams have met twice since the last report and have all but finished non-economics. Last Friday the parties agreed to language on dues collection, workload and job security. Yesterday, time was spent discussing parking, us asking for expanded parking, the University wanting to strike it from the contract. (This will sound familiar if you were around three years ago.) Our team has heard from the membership loud and clear on the parking issue and will maintain our position strongly. The next bargaining session is scheduled for Friday, March 18. Health, dental and vision insurance will be the topic for this four hour session.
