The GEU Awards committee has reviewed the nominations and made their selections for the 2011-2012 award recipients.

This year’s GEU Outstanding Supervisor is Dorinda Carter Andrews from the Department of Teacher Education, and Teacher Education has been chosen as the GEU Outstanding Department. Read more details about the award here.

Not getting paid?

If you’re not getting paid, there are several things you can do to rectify the situation.

1) Contact the Graduate Employees Union! Just email us at geu@geuatmsu.org . We’re here to help you through situations like this!

2) Speak the the administrative assistant of your employing department. Often they can get the process moving, but sometimes they can’t, can’t in a timely manner, or something else is causing a problem.

3) Contact payroll. Sometimes paperwork can get back logged, and they can help move things more quickly or even potentially cut you a handwritten check.

4) File a complaint with the state at http://www.dleg.state.mi.us/email_parser/before_filing_wage_claim.htm . That may sound drastic, but it is a mechanism the university has recommended that TAs use in order to get the money they are owed, and it helps more TAs be paid on time in the future. If you have questions about this, just contact the GEU.

Extra Tuition Waiver Credits

If you are a teaching assistant this summer (2012) your tuition waiver will cover 5 credit hours. If you need to take additional credits, you are not out of luck, though! During GEU’s contract bargaining with the university last spring, GEU negotiated for 100 extra tuition waiver credits for our TAs to use. So, if you need to take more than 5 summer credit hours, be sure to take advantage of this opportunity. Click on the following link for details:

Keep in mind, once you are awarded extra tuition waiver credits, they cannot be awarded to someone else. So please be responsible and courteous to your fellow TAs when you apply.

Stewards Council

The Stewards’ Council is GEU’s governing body. Every department is entitled to at least one Steward, who helps make GEU decisions, communicates GEU information to their Department, and keeps the rest of GEU updated on what’s going on in their Department. Stewards’ Council meets once a week or once every two weeks for an hour, with a meal provided.

With the changing semester, some of our old Stewards are leaving for bigger and better things. That means we need new Stewards!

If you don’t know who your Department’s Steward is, chances are there isn’t one. So come aboard! Email geu@geuatmsu.org to let us know you’re interested in signing up!

Bargaining Update #8

The GEU and Administration bargaining teams have met twice since the last report and have all but finished non-economics. Last Friday the parties agreed to language on dues collection, workload and job security. Yesterday, time was spent discussing parking, us asking for expanded parking, the University wanting to strike it from the contract. (This will sound familiar if you were around three years ago.) Our team has heard from the membership loud and clear on the parking issue and will maintain our position strongly. The next bargaining session is scheduled for Friday, March 18. Health, dental and vision insurance will be the topic for this four hour session.

Please attend the GMM next Wednesday in 11 Olds Hall at 6PM to get the full details and discuss next steps.

Come Protest Threats to Labor and Democracy

Rally at Capitol #1 (Tuesday, March 15): 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. with Michigan League for Human Services…stand up for Michigan’s poor, middle class, and elderly.

Rally at Capitol #2 (Wednesday, March 16): Come join local labor leaders to protest anti-worker legislation (over 40 pieces), including managerial power grabs and cuts to education.

The following transportation will be provided for the Wednesday rally by AFT-Michigan:

Pickups from MSU: Parking lot between Holmes Hall/McDonel Hall; North Case Parking lot; The Union (Abbott Road entrance); Lot 65 between Rather Hall and Butterfield Hall

Buses will do pick-ups each hour on the half-hour, @: 11:30am, 12:30pm, 1:30pm, 2:30pm, 3:30pm, 4:30pm, 5:30pm
