As you may have heard, our Bargaining Team tentatively settled with the University early Friday morning. At Friday’s Board of Trustees meeting, Vice-President Andrew Cooper thanked the University for coming to a compromise with us, and reminded them that we are an important part of the University’s mission.

GEU members will have an opportunity to vote whether or not to accept this Tentative Agreement.

If the members (and the MSU Board of Trustees) vote to approve the Tentative Agreement, it will become a Contract. If they vote not to approve the Tentative Agreement, the GEU Bargaining Team will head back to the table to continue negotiating on behalf of the GEU members. A failure to ratify means that all tentative agreements are void and the negotiations begin anew.

In either case, we need your full support as GEU members and your presence at GEU events, meetings, and actions.

If you have questions, comments, or ideas, we will be having a Membership Meeting to discuss the Agreement. Please come and lend your voice to the conversation. GEU is you.

WHAT: GEU at the Board of Trustees
WHERE: Admin Building, 4th floor
WHEN: Friday, April 15, 9:30 am

As Sam mentioned in the last post, our Bargaining Team and officers burned some midnight oil last night in an attempt to get our contract finished–something the University says is their priority.

It didn’t go so well, so we’re going to be bargaining again tonight. Please stop by and spend a few minutes at our vigil. The Bargaining Team really needs our support right now. We’ll be in the office from 5pm.

If bargaining doesn’t conclude successfully tonight, I will be addressing the Board of Trustees about our concerns. Please come to the Board meeting and show your support. The Trustees need to see that we’re an important part of this University, and your presence at the Board meeting is a very good signal of that.

I hope I can count on your support. See you Thursday night and Friday morning!

The GEU played an integral role in getting thousands of peaceful protesters to the Capitol in Lansing on Wednesday to protest Governor Snyder’s cuts on higher education and his attack on collective bargaining. The GEU E-Board, stewards, and many many members were there rallying along with numerous other Unions and concerned citizens.

This is just the start – keep checking our website (this page and facebook/twitter), talk with your department steward, and come to our upcoming events to see what YOU can do to help fight Snyder’s attacks on education and democracy – attacks that directly affect TAs at MSU.

Below is a video featuring 2009-2010 GEU President Elizabeth Pellerito talking at the rally about how the current situation affects TAs. Elizabeth’s speech starts around the 33 minute mark.

With the Big Ten men’s basketball tournament set to start on Thursday, there is just as much excitement on the streets of the Midwest as there is on the court… and it’s in the streets that the battle for collective bargaining rights is taking place in Wisconsin, Ohio, Indiana, and Michigan!

There was a rally this morning in Lansing. Right now, a group of GEU members is in Madison, WI, to support the ongoing effort in support of public employees. If you have a few days to travel during Spring Break, another option is to rally at the Indiana State Capitol on Thursday. (By the way, the MSU men’s basketball team plays against Iowa in Indianapolis, also on Thursday.)

WHAT: Cross-Institution Rally and Post-Rally Drinks (free!)
WHERE: Capitol Building in Indianapolis, IN
WHEN: Thursday, 11:00 – 2:00 (with Drinks and Basketball from 2:00 onward)
WHO: Sponsored by the Graduate Employees Organization at the University of Illinois
