Executive Board Elections

The GEU Executive Board consists of five elected officers who serve one-year terms (Aug 1 – July 31).

  • President
  • Treasurer
  • Vice President for Contract Negotiation & Enforcement
  • Vice President of Organizing & Outreach
  • Information Officer

These positions are unpaid (except for the undying gratitude of your fellow GA’s, of course). For a list of the current officers, click here. Below is a description of the five offices and below that some FAQ’s.

GEU Executive Board Offices and Duties

President Serve as chief spokesperson for the Union. Responsible for collective bargaining agreement negotiation and administration.

  1. Facilitate Executive Board meetings.
  2. Serve as chief spokesperson for the Union
  3. Support Executive Board with regular communication
  4. Attend monthly CLO and Lansing Labor Council meetings
  5. Maintain contact with the American Federation of Teachers and AFL-CIO and state affiliates
  6. Represent Union to Employer and community
  7. Close contact with Treasurer regarding budget administration
  8. Serve as a media contact
  9. Attend monthly MSU Board of Trustees meetings
  10. Responsible for staff
  11. Establish and maintain external relations with other groups.

Treasurer Maintains all financial operations and records.

  1. Pay bills, reimbursements, track payments
  2. Make regular reports on budget to Executive Board, Stewards Council and membership
  3. Perform annual reconciliation and report discrepancies to the Employer
  4. Perform monthly dues reconciliation and report
  5. Prepare banking
  6. Prepare records for annual review/audit
  7. Coordinate tax preparation
  8. Coordinate fundraising
  9. Coordinate Payroll
  10. Prepare annual budget for membership approval
  11. Chair Budget Committee
  12. Pay dues to affiliates

Vice-President for Organizing & Outreach Responsible for member recruitment, education and cultivating new leaders.

  1. 1. Coordination of member drives and related events
  2. 2. Coordinate new member outreach
  3. 3. Coordinate phone banking and visits
  4. Maintain Stewards contact information
  5. Recruitment and training of department Stewards
  6. Maintain relations with other relevant campus organizations
  7. Chair Events Committee
  8. Participate in monthly AGEL call
  9. Maintain relations with other AFT -MI locals
  10. Assume role of President in case of absence

Vice-President for Contract Negotiations & Enforcement Responsible for contract negotiations and agreement enforcement.

  1. Serve on Grievance Committee
  2. Provide orientation and training for Grievance Committee members
  3. Recruit Grievance Committee members
  4. Act as a liaison between E-Board, Stewards and Bargaining Team
  5. Represent Union to Employer regarding contract issues at bi-monthly meetings
  6. Organize GEU Members and leaders
  7. Assist in membership drives and events
  8. Assist in providing training for department Stewards
  9. Coordinate Healthcare Advocates

Information Officer Responsible for record keeping and communications

  1. Take and disseminate meeting minutes
  2. Maintain communication records
  3. Maintain key holder list
  4. Coordinate monthly newsletter and emails to membership
  5. Maintain website and social media accounts activities
  6. Media liaison
  7. Prepare meeting agendas
  8. Maintain Archives

GEU Executive Board Elections FAQ

How do I get on the ballot? Nominate yourself. Call or email the office. Any GEU member in good standing (which means your dues are paid) is eligible to hold office.

How do I nominate someone? Send an email or call the union office with your name and the nominees name and contact info. Your nominee will be contacted and if they accept the nomination and meet the above criteria (member in good standing) they will be added to the ballot.

What is the election process? Nominations will be closed at the start of the April 19th GMM. For any offices which are uncontested a vote will be held at the meeting. For any contested office a secure electronic ballot will be sent to all eligible voting members within five days of the GMM. Voters have 2 weeks to vote. The membership will be notified of the results via email.

How do I find out about the candidates? Come to the GMM! Each candidate will be given time to speak and in the case of contested offices each candidate will be asked to prepare a short statement to be included with the electronic ballot.
